Year 13 Trip to Denmark

After a fantastic quiz night on Friday 2nd October which helped us raise some money for the trip, on the 4th October 16 Year 13 students and 2 teachers set off for Denmark, which is just to the North of Germany. This was to take part in a cultural exchange.

We were all a bit nervous about meeting our exchange partners and staying with them although
we had been in contact with them since August, but when we arrived at Billund airport we
recognised them instantly and there was no awkwardness at all! Then, we had dinner and got to
know them and their families a bit better.

On Monday, we attended their school (Ribe Katedralskole), which is one of the most prestigious
in Denmark. We experienced a day in the life of a Danish student, which was very interesting as
it was very different to our own normal school day. In the evening, there was a formal reception
at the school, and we had all helped our students and their families to prepare some Danish food
for this.

On Tuesday, we visited the island of Mondo, which we accessed through the sea on a tractor. The scenery was beautiful, and we went wading with nets to see what creatures we could find. We also learnt about life on the island and all its difficulties. In the evening, we socialised with each other and with the Danish students.

On Wednesday, we visited the Viking Museum in Ribe, where we had great fun dressing up as
Vikings. Some of us then went to Esbjerg to shop, whereas others stayed in Ribe to explore the
town further.

When we arrived back at school on Wednesday evening, we were all tired, but we all agreed that
we had had an amazing time and were all very sad to leave our new Danish friends. I speak on
behalf of everyone when I say a big thank you to Mr Solomon and Miss Richards because without them this opportunity would not have happened.

Year 7 Basketball Shoot Out

The Year 11 college students decided to organise a tournament for Year 7. We took responsibility
for every part of the tournament. Every tutor group in Year 7 picked four boys and four girls to
compete in a basketball shoot out. Each student had 30 seconds to score as many baskets as
possible. All the tutor groups played really well and it was a very close competition.

The Results:
7RC - 8 baskets 7KG -7 baskets
7RT - 7 baskets 7NW - 8 baskets
7CA - 4 baskets 7IP - 3 baskets
7MW - 8 baskets 7TL - 4 baskets

On Thursday 1st October there was a playoff between 7RC, 7NW and 7MW. The overall winners
were 7MW. We learnt lots of skills and really enjoyed running the tournament.
By Ben Abdee, Connor Bailey, Aaron Granger, Jade Griffin, Josh Skeet and Garry Smith.

The college students were superb and showed great maturity in organising the tournament for
the Year 7 students. Well done to them all. Mrs Parsons

Dance Week Assembly Performances

All this week a number of students from Years 7-11 have performed in assembly to promote Dance at Hayes School. They were a shining example to their hard work and commitment to dance and extra curricular clubs. All of the dancers received excellent feedback from staff and students and have worked wonders in promoting all of the dance clubs at Hayes. Any students wanting more information about the clubs should contact Mrs Jefferies. Well Done and thank you! Mrs Jefferies

Year 10 Geography Trip North Downs

Letters will be coming home in regards to the Year 10 GCSE fieldtrip to the North Downs in May 2010. Please return the permission slip and deposit by Friday 16th October. Please ask your Geography teacher for further information.

Media Talk

On Wednesday KS5 and some selected Year 11 Media students were given a talk by Mr.Alistair Dobbs a freelance media practitioner. Mr Dobbs is extremely experience and knowledgeable and gave the students a useful insight into the production cycle of a national broadsheet magazine supplement. Many of our students were shocked and surprised at how technical and intricate the printing process can be and were particularly amazed when he told them that a spelling mistake ended up costing the paper £17,000 in printing costs! I was particularly pleased to see that Apple computers, Adobe Photoshop and InDesign are the industry standards for the print industry – this is reflected in our recently updates Mac computer suite.

This talk is part of our continued commitment to enable students to place their work in an industrial context, and have contact with professionals from within the media industry.

If you currently work in the creative and media industry, or are involved in a career where English, Maths or ICT are key you may be able to help our students. We are looking for people willing to fill in a simple questionnaire about their job and career for our students to access and use in their studies. If you think you can help or know somebody that could then please get in
contact via email : s.farrow@hayes.bromley.sch.uk

MusicFest

It was a delight to listen to nearly 30 of our students performing at the Musicfest on October 6th. It was an excellent programme full of enthusiasm, talent and variety. All musical tastes were catered for, from an ethereal flute piece to swirling electric guitars, from boys and girls singing solo and in duets to instrumental solos. It was good to hear students’ compositions being performed alongside well know standards.

Congratulations to all performers and thank you also to the Music department, to the light, sound and ticket team, to the PTA for refreshments and lastly to the audience for being so appreciative.

Well done to the following performers:
Steven Coutinho, Alex Waeland, Jacob Samuels, Martin Turner, Hannah Ekagha, Caroline Ekagha, Scarlett White, Tansel Ali, Olivia Harris, Baris Hakki, Sophie Jones, Max Broggio, Alex Cripps-Mahajan, Phil Capon, Ella Cullinan, Henry Terry, Jack Sumarno, Jack Tucker, Will North, Tahir Hakki, Emily Compton, Beth Seares, Katherine Vennard, Hannah Stanton, Rebekah Lucking, Finton O’Brien, Jack Lock, Mark Gerrard, Kieran Thompson

Local School and Community Council

Primary schools and Secondary schools within the Bromley area have joined the LSCC- Local School and Community Council, set up by Hayes School one year ago. On September 23rd, the launch party of the LSCC took place, giving many ideas on how to help their local community.
David Malcolm, Business Manager of Hayes School, said ‘Hayes School in Bromley has been working over the past year to organise and create a voice for local schools to help support and promote their local community, as well as tackle local issues.

The LSCC’s main mission is to get students in to the community to help develop it and make it a better place for everyone, starting its voyage to flourish’. Many other associations within the Bromley area have also joined the LSCC, adding to the many representatives on their council, such as the Metropolitan Police, the Bromley Transport Group and Hayes Village Association.

Meeting once a term, the LSCC will fulfil their slogan of ‘Supporting our Community’, and from the launch party, the Council already have many ideas for improving their local community.
‘When the students got together for the first time at the Launch Party, they came up with many ideas of development for the community, such as a Pelican Crossing put in at Hartfield Crescent in West Wickham.

It’s a busy road with lots of school children passing through it, therefore it would be in the interest of children and the local community to put one there’ said Will Pemberton, Head of Business Studies at Hayes School. ‘It’s all about us working together. The Metropolitan Police and our council have decided to try and tackle teenage drinking in the Bromley area, as well as drivers using mobiles on the road.’

The first council session will take place in November, where they will come up with an action plan to tackle these problems. For more information, please contact Hayes School on 0208 462 2767.

Open Morning Saturday 10th October

This will mean that we close early to prepare on Friday 9th October (1.00pm) and open late on
Monday 12th October at 10.45am. Thank you to all those involved in presenting our school to the prospective students and their families.

Year 12 Conference

Friday 9th October is the deadline for reply slips for the Year 12 conference which is an integral part of the Hayes School Sixth Form year. The conference promotes teamwork and participation and is just one of many events that will provide students with good evidence of these skills for job and University applications. If your son or daughter has yet to return their slips and payment please can they do so on Monday as soon as possible? All students are expected to participate in the conference, if you have any queries about the events please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Year 13 Parents' Evening

Parents and guardians are warmly invited to the Year 13 Parents’ Evening on Wednesday
21st October between 4pm and 7pm. Letters have gone home this week regarding this via students along with a blankappointment sheet. Students must make appointments directly with teachers so please ensure your son or daughter is aware of your availability on the 21st to avoid
disappointment. This is the last formal meeting for Year 13 parents at school before the University application deadline so I would urge as many parents to attend as possible.

Hayes Students help to make bus journeys better

On Thursday 9th July Hollie Jeffery, Luke Gentle, Maria Crisp, Jobie Budd, Owen Crowley and Grace Hunt from Year 10 took part in some filming for an information film which is being made by the Bromley Police Safer Transport Team and Bromley Borough.

Along with six students from Priory School and three senior citizens, our Year 10s’ played the roles of disgruntled passengers having to put up with the anti social behaviour of some hoodied and aggressive older citizens. The film will be shown on information screens around the Borough – so look out for these impressive performances.

Healthy Schools Award Presentation

The National Healthy Schools Award has four core themes that relate to both the school curriculum and the emotional and physical learning environment in school. Each theme includes a number of criteria that schools need to fulfil in order to achieve National Healthy School Status. This year Hayes School met all the criteria and secured Healthy School Status for the next three years.

On Monday 13th July Mr Preston, Miss Carter and a number of students attended the awards ceremony at the Education Development Centre to collect the new plaque and certificate.

Year 10 and Year 11 Information Evenings – Dates for you Diaries

In September we will be holding our usual Information Evenings for parents of Year 10 and Year 11 students. Feedback from previous years tells us that parents find this a very useful introduction to what lies ahead over the course of the coming year. The dates for next year are:

• Year 10 Information Evening – Tuesday 8th September
• Year 11 Information Evening – Wednesday 23rd September

We will contact you all again much nearer the time, but I wanted to highlight these dates now so parents can keep them free.

Thank you, we look forward to seeing you all in September.

PTA Fundraising – Match funding

Do you work for a company that offers match funding for events? If so, and you would be able to support our fundraising in school next year, please contact the PTA so that we can double the money raised for the school at future events and with future initiatives.

Back in the Day

My Year 10 GCSE Drama group recently completed a unique and extremely gratifying project involving senior residents from our local community. Last year’s Year 10 performed a show about infection and disease in the local hospital to trainee medical staff. This year we have focused on the memories of six local individuals, particularly the time in and after World War II.
We began by interviewing our guests about such topics as Evacuation, Rationing, life during the Blitz, and the Post-War period.

We then took these memories as the beginning point for devising a ‘documentary’ style drama which combined the facts of certain historical incidents 1939-55 with the personal memories of our guests. As the cast will no doubt tell you, this was been a great challenge, not only because there are 19 of them to allocate roles to, but deciding what to include, while remaining factually accurate and entertaining, proved extremely tricky!!

We would like to thank local residents Roy, Irene, Audrey, Harry, Arthur and Liz for giving up their time for us. Without them, there would have been no show. Also, without the efforts of expert Dr Meena Khatwa, Camilla Harney, Sylvia Farrow, Sarah Wharton from Year 11 and my fellow colleagues in the Drama department, we would never have got the show off the ground.

Finally, the students themselves, who worked through some long and very heated (!) after-school rehearsals. As our guest Liz Poulter said:
“I think this project worked very well indeed and I think the students really got inside the hearts of the people they were portraying…I found the production very emotional... It is a very odd feeling to be whisked back in time and to relive part of your life. This is exactly what happened – not only with the portrayal of my life, but those of other people who experienced similar things or lived in the same area. We all thoroughly enjoyed the experience… We cannot say how much we enjoy working with the students and being able to pass on the things we have learnt over the years. I am sure that it has made these students think and hopefully guide them in the future.”

Very well done. I am very proud of you all.
Mr Eden

Hayes Breakdancers

Our Breakdance group 'Hayes-ablaze' performed at The Mermaid Theatre, London last Thursday. They have taken part in the Royal Academy of Dance 'Step Into Dance' programme throughout the year, culminating in a Borough performance at Kemnal Technology College last month. They performed and auditioned fantastically, alongside a number of other schools in the borough and this led to them being selected for the Step Into Dance Live! event.

They have worked really hard and have been the most committed and enthusiastic attendees at Dance clubs this year. Congratulations to Durone Stokes, Joe Dixon, Raven Whitehorne, Harvey Husnu-Beresford, Liam Briant, Daniel Toop, Kelvin Kyeremateng, Tom Nguyen, Kien Nguyen and Jordan Eels. Another fantastic achievement for Hayes dancers!

New Year 9 Maths Sets

We are lucky enough to be timetabled by ourselves next year for Year 9, allowing us to have true ‘ability’ sets. We have also been given an extra group in the uv population. This has caused some shuffling of the students. Please do not be concerned if your child’s Maths group changes by one. Miss Calder, 2i/c (KS3) Maths

KS3 Maths Textbooks

By now all of Year 7, 8 & 9 who were issued textbooks by the Maths department are expected to have returned them to their teachers. If they are still at home, please bring them in to any Maths teacher as soon as possible, so that we can prepare them for next years’ classes.

Year 10 Enterprise Day– Friday 17th July 2009

As part of the Work Related Learning curriculum Year 10 students had the opportunity of participating in a “Learn to Earn” activity-based programme in preparing them for their future working life. The day was designed to give students an understanding of how the importance of learning together with the significance of a successful education will help them to better succeed in their future lives.

It was a fun packed day with “hands-on” activities where students had the opportunity to explore and identify their aptitudes, abilities and things they enjoy doing and begin to match these with potential future careers. It also gave them an understanding of the type of skills, knowledge and experience required to meet their future goals.

This was a very successful and valuable day with a positive learning experience which should help students with career choices in the future. Thanks to Mr Hurst, Mr Preston and the Year 10 Form Tutors for their support during the day.

Carole Stewart, Work Related Learning Co-ordinator

Year 12 AS Biology Fieldwork Visit to BEECHE

Last Thursday AS Biology Year 12 students visited the Bromley Environmental Education Centre at High Elms (BEECHE) for a day of studying fieldwork techniques. The morning was spent looking at terrestrial habitats and how to sample on them, doing belt transects from open meadow into deep woodland. They also had a chance to try sweep netting in another meadow, and were able to visit a Site of Scientific Specific Interest (SSSI) where there were many species of different Orchids on chalk grassland. In the afternoon they were introduced to sampling in freshwater habitats and got the opportunity to identify freshwater invertebrates and learn how to take sweep nets samples in a freshwater habitat. Even with the heat and sun, the Year 12’s were exemplary in their behaviour and their effort throughout the day.

We also wish all the best to Miss Williams, Miss Semple and Miss Pattison who are going on maternity leave and finally to Keith Quince who steps down from the Governing Body which he has served on for 8 years and as Chair of Governors for 4 years.

Wednesday 15th July Hayes Summer Concert

Our evening of music started with the world debut of the LSO (Little Staff Orchestra): unbeknown to students, staff have been slaving away in secrecy on instruments many had not played for decades to produce a performance of ‘The Muppets’ for the concert. I would like to congratulate them all on their bravery in doing something well out of their normal comfort zone!

In case you missed the concert, members of the LSO were Miss Bessant and Miss Richards (flutes), Mr Cracknell, Mrs Jefferies, Miss Robertson and Miss Wotton (clarinets), Miss Rowland (saxophone), Miss Brushett (violin), Mrs Baker and Miss Wood (violas), Mrs Greenidge (double bass), Mr Budden and Mrs Stewart (piano), Mr Walker (drums), Dr Roseveare and Ms Johnson (recorders), Mr Hurst and Mrs MacMillan (percussion). We hope to hear more from the LSO in the future!

The concert continued with items from Samba Band, Wind Band, Chamber Choir and Keyboard Club. Special mention must go to Emily Mills and Sam Huckle for leading Samba Band and Daniel Thomas for leading one of the Keyboard Club pieces. We also had items from our Year 13 leavers; we are very sad to see Sian Arkins, Leanne Finch-Tanner and Kieran Hughes move on, but wish them all the very best for the future.

The second half of the concert took place in the natural amphitheatre otherwise known as the ‘blue circle’, and was a re-creation of one of our ‘tour concerts’ which we give on our tours abroad every April. Choir led the way with a ‘surround sound’ performance of Adiemus, followed by Concert Band and a fabulous drum solo from Max Dickerson to lead seamlessly into Jazz Band. All the musicians wore tour t-shirts from previous tours, and every single tour (except one) since 2001 was sartorially represented, giving a colourful effect in the evening sun.

Everyone present enjoyed a lovely evening with a huge range of fabulous music from talented Hayes students. I would like to thank the music prefects for their excellent help, and my wonderful colleagues in the Music department Mrs Greenidge, Miss Wood and Mr Hurst.

Miss Werry, Director of Music

Tuesday 14th July – Sports Day (Years 7-10) and University Careers Day for Year 12

The day started brilliantly and we looked forward to another wonderful Sports Day at Norman Park. The organisation was brilliant. The student enthusiasm and talent quickly showed with the excellent performances and the enthusiastic cheering. However, the clouds came, the heavens opened and Sports Day ultimately had to be abandoned (before it turned into a swimming gala!). We apologise for this and for not being able to reschedule the event, but we felt we had no other option. The students and PE staff had put so much into the day that this was a great loss.

Monday 13th July – Bromley Collegiate Graduation at Hayes

This year over 60 teachers have been trained by the 9 Secondary Schools, including Hayes, that make up the Bromley Collegiate. On Monday evening we celebrated their graduation as fully qualified teachers at Hayes. The Hayes Jazz Band played, Sixth Formers served food and drink and the guests were full of praise for Hayes.

La Rochelle

La Rochelle trip left with students from Years 7-10 and 4 intrepid staff. The trip returned on Monday night exhausted, but with brilliant reports for the great time all had experienced and the fantastic impression all the students had made.

Excellence through Endeavour

This is our new school motto and one I think that sums up how much has been achieved by so many at Hayes this year. In all areas from the academic to the sporting, musical and dramatic to the personal and social it has been truly impressive to see the progress made and the excellent outcomes all achieved by incredible commitment and effort (endeavour!)

I hope all students can look back on 2008/9 with a real sense of achievement and those with imminent GCSE, AS and A level results can look forward with confidence to well deserved exam success. Not everyone can be excellent at everything, but with endeavour we all can improve and possibly achieve excellence – without endeavour we are condemned to underachievement, mediocrity and disappointment whether this is in Golf or Maths!

Thank you to all the students who have made Hayes such a great school to teach at, to the parents for your fantastic support of your children and the school and to the staff (teaching and associate) for their commitment, skill and care.

I wish everyone a safe and very happy summer and good luck for the exams!
Mr K J Osborne, Headteacher

London Youth Games – Girls Football

Once again a girl’s football team from Hayes were selected to represent Bromley at the London Youth Games. On Sunday 5th July the girls played a number of matches against the other London Borough’s. Each match was played to a very high standard and the girls played really well throughout the competition showing great team spirit. In the last match we were very unlucky not to win, with at least 8 shots on goal.

Congratulations and thanks for a fantastic day to; Amy Baldwinson, Ruby Briant, Laura Day, Stephanie Dewick, Laura Hughes, Nikki Lamboura, Tori Russell and Jade Stone.

Year 9 Enterprise Day – Dragon’s Pen

Year 9 students really enjoyed a challenging “hands-on” activity morning when, working in teams, they had to come up with new and original ideas which they then had to turn into a product to potentially sell to the public. This was an ideal opportunity for them to get a taste of and learn about business, as well as develop entrepreneurial skills, in a fun and practical environment.

The activity forms part of the Work Related Learning curriculum for Year 9 students and helped the students to develop their teamwork and communication skills. This successful and valuable day, was based on the television programme Dragon’s Den.

Thank you to Miss Harrison and Year 9 Form Tutors for their support during the day.

“Hayes School encourages and develops impressively confident and articulate girls who attain and achieve highly” (OfSTED 2009)

On Monday 22nd June Hayes School received a visit from two of Her Majesty’s Inspectors (HMI’s) to review how well the school supports girls’ achievement and well being. This is a new ‘themed’ inspection and will serve two purposes. Firstly, it assesses how well Hayes School challenges, supports and develops girls. Secondly, it is part of a national study to see if there are variations in girls’ achievement and well being compared to boys or between schools of different types (e.g. mixed, single sex etc) or by region. Hayes was the first school inthe programme of inspections and so the full report will not be available until next year.

The HMI visited lessons, reviewed exam results and other data, spoke to groups of students from all years and reviewed the curriculum, extra curricular activities and opportunities for
girls to develop to their potential without any stereotyping restrictions.

The HMI concluded that Hayes did an excellent job of challenging, supporting and developing girls. Their 3 main conclusions were:

1) Attainment and achievement of girls at Hayes is very high. The school is very effective in identifying and supporting students in danger of underachievement. The quality of teaching underlies this.
2) Hayes girls are happy, confident and articulate. They do not feel dominated or overshadowed by boys. They have opportunities to develop outside traditional gender stereotypes especially in Drama, but also in subjects such as DT, Science and Maths, which traditionally more boys have taken.
3) The care and support system at Hayes is incredibly effective in supporting girls. Teachers and associate staff were praised bythe girls for being available, giving time and helping to resolve
individual and group problems. The HMI felt this was essential especially for girls well being.

In conclusion the HMI praised the school for its ethos and commitment to raising the achievement of all students and providing outstanding care for girls which make them feel safe
and happy and become confident, articulate and successful individuals.

Swine Flu

Please note that as Swine Flu has become very widespread (although no cases yet at Hayes) the health authority guide is:a) Continue to use good hygiene practice especially washing your hands with soap and water. We are regularly checking that soap isavailable in all the toilets. Also use tissues to cover your mouth if you cough or sneeze and bin tissues as soon as possible.b) Do not come to school if you have a fever and flu like symptoms. Contact NHS direct or your local surgery (do not go there).c) Schools are to remain open as there is no evidence that closing them would reduce the spread as it is circulating in the widercommunity. The main evidence is that Swine Flu is not very different from other types of flu and is generally mild except in a minority of cases. We will keep parents and students informed if we have any confirmed cases of Swine Flu or the advice changes.

Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, – Art, Theatre, Music, 2D and 3D Design, Craft, Graphic Design,Product Design, Animation, Dance, Photography, Events, Video and Film, New Media, Fashion, Footwear, Creative Writing, Computer Games and Advertising

Road Safety

We are getting concerned again about the safety issues in the morning at the Baston Road and West Common Road entrances.Firstly, at the Baston Road entrance students often cross both lanes of this busy road near the East Lodge gate and should cross the roadone lane at a time using the island opposite the Media Zone gate. Also students getting off the bus in Baston Road tend to just walk out infront of the traffic expecting the cars to stop. This also happens in West Common Road when students cross the road.Secondly, at both entrances parents are dropping off students inside the school grounds where staff park. Parents are not permitted todrop off their child on the school site unless there are exceptional circumstances. Please could you ensure you child is aware of the safety procedures highlighted above and please ensure when dropping off your child atthe school you do not drive on to the school site. Thank you.

Student Reception

Please be advised that when parents leave lunches, PE kits, homework etc for students to collect from Student Reception we cannotalways guarantee they will receive the message to collect the items. We currently do not have a tannoy system, but endeavour to get messages to students via registers and email messages to tutors. Can we suggest you either text your child to inform them so they can collect the item at break times or ensure your child checks their bagsbefore they leave for school in the morning to ensure they have anything they need for the day. Thank you.

On Friday 19th June, Miss Lipscombe and I accompanied 13 students from KS3 Debating Club to Bishop Justus School for their first “awaymatch”.We were welcomed with fruit juice and BJ’s famous biscuits, before entering into combat. In the first debate on “Young people have neverhad it so good”, Emma Corris, Poppy Simmons and Alex Randall held the opposition to a draw. In their debate on compulsory militaryservice, Chloe Edgely, Raphael Dabbs and Katy Hulm were narrowly beaten. Rebecca Cordina and Fiona Hawk carried out their duties astimekeeper and Chairperson with the same professionalism as our debaters, and our small but enthusiastic band of supporters (RobertAshby, Chantal da Silva, Anna Hunter, Kate Mawbey and Jordan Easy) held their “C’mon Hayes” banners aloft with pride! The competition was judged by Tim Green, who is Bromley’s lead English specialist; he was extremely complimentary about the confidence, articulacy and logic of all our speakers. All the students attending this event thoroughly enjoyed it, and were able to pick up many usefultips for future debates. We hope to establish this as a regular fixture in our Debating calendar, with Bishop Justus coming to Hayes in the very near future. We will be ready for them!

On Wednesday we received a visit from an advisor from the specialist schools and academies trust. We are very pleased that she recognised the high standards of achievement and quality of opportunity that we provide for our students and community partners. We are delighted by her observations that, ’you can feel justifiably proud of your achievements!’ as ‘it is clear that the specialism has a majorimpact in and beyond the school’.Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to or participated in our specialist work to make it so impressive. Mathletics – Specialist Schools and Academies Trust Maths Challenge 15th June – 22nd June

Year 7-9 students from Specialist Schools and Academies in the United Kingdom will battle it out in a one off Mathematics challenge! Students will have the task of answering as many correct questions as they can to make their school the SSAT Champions!Students will compete using Mathletics, an online Maths programme and can compete in two ways:

• Live Mathletics – Students compete against other students in a 60 second mental arithmetic showdown.
• Mathletics National Curriculum Topics – Students tackle curriculum based questions.

Students gain 1 point for each correct answer in Live Mathletics and 10 points per correct answer in the Curriculum Topics. These points determine the rankings on the Hall of Fame. We set the students the challenge of gaining 1000 points and this will earn them a Participation Certificate for the week and exciting prizes. This competition is Internet based so the students will have to access www.mathletics.co.uk and will need a username and a password to complete.

This will be available from the students’ Maths teacher. Once the students have their details they will be able to practice using the programme before the challenge. The accounts are already active and the students can begin using Mathletics right away. The challengestarts at 10.00am on Monday 15th June and finishes at 3.00pm on Monday 22nd June.

The students can use Mathletics and their account 24/7 but only the points gained after 10.00am on Monday 15th June will count for the challenge.

Hayes School Motto

You may recall that in recent weeks we have been conducting a survey of views (staff, parents, students, and governors) on a new motto forHayes School. Thank you to all those who voted. After counting all votes we would like to announce that our new school motto is to be:

‘Excellence Through Endeavour’

We feel that this accurately expresses our view of what Hayes School encourages and values. We feel it is a motto that can be applied to all students and to all situations. It is about academic, personal and social challenge. It is also about ‘ipsative’ progress where the priority for students is improving on their previous best. We wanted a motto that could be used by everyone, for everyone and in all situations. We feel this motto provides this. It will also have the great asset of being immediately understandable! In the weeks ahead we will start publicising this more and more throughout our school. We will also be inviting students to come up with adesign for this new motto.Thank you again to all those who took part .

Remote Access to Hayes Servers

As part of our Maths and ICT Specialism we have invested in remote access to our servers for all Hayes School staff and students. This will allow all students to access their user areas (N drive) from home as well as the shared student user area (U drive).

To download the software please go to: http://www.hayes.bromley.sch.uk/downloads/
Click on the Download Ranger Outpost, and follow the instructions on screen to install the software. Once installed students simply logon using their school username and password. The student needs to then click on their user number and their files will appear. Drag
the file that you need to your desktop to download it. Work on the file. Save the file to your desktop and drag it back into the Outpost folder you want to save it in. Please remember that normal ICT school policy applies when uploading work to the server.

You will need to use the same software that you used at school to continue working on the files. To that end we have free Microsoft Office 2003 disks for students. Unfortunately other software houses do not allow us to give software away for free. Please collect a Microsoft User Agreement form from the library or the finance office, return it with 50p for the cost of the disk and install on your home PC. If you have any issues with the software please speak to your ICT teacher.

Interview with Keith Quince, Chair of Governors

On Friday 15th May, we had the pleasure of interviewing Keith Quince. Mr Quince is the current Chair of Governors, but is stepping down at the end of June. We asked him a few questions:

• How long have you been a School Governor? 11 years, and I’ve enjoyed every single one.

• What made you apply to be a School Governor in the first place? I didn’t actually, I was put forward for it by a friend which led me to think that it was a good idea.

• What has been your best memory? Not so much a best memory, but my association with
the school is something that I will always be proud of. Appointing Kieran Osborne also, a decision that I still feel was spot on.

• What has been your most difficult moment? Having to deal with unfair treatment appeals; it was a sensitive matter that could have been difficult to deal with. Aside from that, there has been no real challenging moment.

• If you had to give your successor one piece of advice, what would it be? To take advice and talk to the people around you. I’ve found their input invaluable.

• Would you do it all again? Yes, without a doubt. It’s been a pleasure and an experience that I would recommend to anyone.

• What are you going to do next? Spend more time with my family.

On behalf of all the students at Hayes School we are extremely grateful for the dedication and support that Mr Quince has shown us and wish him well in the future. James Busby, Head Boy & Sarah Perryman, Head Girl

On behalf of all the students and teachers at Hayes School I would like to thank James and Sarah for performing so admirably in their roles this year. I would like to wish them well in their exams and as they move onto University.

Hayes School Race Night

Hayes School are trying to raise money for a new school rugby kit for each year group. We are hoping to raise £3,000.00 for this worthwhile cause especially as the school has recently been awarded the Rugby Football Union (RFU) Development Schools Award which highlights our commitment to teaching rugby at Hayes School.

As part of the fundraising we are organising a Race Night at Hayes School on July 3rd 2009. Tickets are now available from the PE Department for this fantastic event. Remember you can still help in one of the following ways:

• A donation of a generous prize that would be associated to a race.
• Sponsoring the whole evening for £300.00 where we would do everything possible to advertise and promote your company on the night.
• A donation of £500.00 that would purchase a rugby kit for one of our year groups with your company logo on the shirt.

We would appreciate any support that your company could give us in raising this money. If you wish to discuss this further please do not hesitate to contact me either by telephone or by e-mail m.stamato@hayes.bromley.sch.uk.

Year 7 Trip to Greenwich

Year 7wx had a successful day out in Greenwich at the Royal Observatory Greenwich on 21st May. Below are some of the feedback from the students:

“We enjoyed the science trip because it was very educational. The best bit was when we went into the Planetarium.”
- Adedayo Odukale 7SMW

“I thought the Science trip was very enjoyable and I learnt lots of things on astronomy. There were loads of equipment to play around with in different rooms. In one room, there was a brilliant model of the Sun and the Earth and it taught me why there are different seasons.”
- George Cowley 7JR

“ …..My favourite bit was the Planetarium where I actually felt like I was moving in space. I saw what the Solar System is like, how the Sun worked, how the Earth is tilted and how long it takes to go around the Sun…”
- Phoebe Purkiss 7NJS

“…We were shown what the Solar system and planets are made of. We went to Activity Space and talked about which countries have day and night. In the astronomy galleries we had a chance to play with exhibits….”
- Samuel James 7SMW.

Year 9 Maths

Year 9 students were informed in an assembly during period 1 on Wednesday 3rd June that their GCSE English, Maths and Science courses start now. Students were given details on how to become independent learners and online support available to them. They were also reminded about equipment and we would like you to encourage your child to have these items on them for all Maths and Science lessons:

• Pens Pencils
• Ruler Eraser
• Sharpener Compass
• Protractor (angle measurer)
• Calculator

It is important that students have these on them so that firstly they know how to use them and secondly, they do not eat in to valuable lesson time.

Year 10 Maths Modular Exam –11/06/09

About 40 Year 10 students will be completing modular Maths assessment on Thursday during period 1 in the Sports Hall. The students will complete two 20 minute assessments. They will be allowed to use a calculator for the first section, but not for the second section. Students affected by this are taught by Mr Solomon and Mr Appah.

There will be two after school revision sessions for these students – one on Tuesday 9th June and the other on Wednesday 10th June. The first session will cover graphs and the second one will look at averages and probability. If your child is affected by this, please encourage them to come along to these revision sessions. They will be held in A2H on both days.

Extra Curricular Clubs at Hayes School

As part of Hayes School’s commitment towards providing more opportunities for learning, better relationships and more self esteem amongst students, we have scheduled a list of over 60 extra curricular clubs! We are delighted that over 50% of Year 7s, 35% of Year 8s and nearly 38% of Year 9s have all tried at least one of these clubs during the Spring Term.

However, that still leaves a proportion of students yet to take advantage of the opportunity to really make the most of their time at Hayes School. Find out for yourself why so many students have taken this chance… check out the Summer Clubs menu (displayed in all tutor rooms) for more details!

Holocaust Survivor Speaks to Students

On Tuesday 12th May 2009, Year 9 were visited by Mr Josef Perl, a survivor of the Holocaust. Mr Perl came in to talk to the students about his experiences during World War 2 and also to answer any questions that they have. All students found the talk extremely interesting and very emotional. The following are extracts from students’ letters to Mr Perl

“Thank you very much for the fascinating and also terrifying insight into your life experience. Before you had come and talked to us, Nazi Germany and Hitler seemed very hard to believe and understand- it was just something that we studied in class. Now I can appreciate that it was all real and that people like you went through an horrific ordeal just because of your beliefs.”
- Elaine Seow

“I admire your personality and how you don’t agree with staying angry at someone and I think that it is really great that you are able to forgive the soldiers.”

- Rebecca Davies

“The most moving part of your tale was when you told us you saw your own mother, sisters, nieces and nephews being shot before your eyes. I know that I myself would never be able to cope as well as you have.”

- Sophie Waeland

“I found it very inspirational when you said that the children are the future and that if we tried we could make a difference in the world and make the future better.”

- Hannah Murphy

“I personally am very interested in the Holocaust and to have someone talk to me first hand about what happened was so interesting and I consider myself and my school friends very lucky. I wish you and your family the best and thank you again.”

- Saffron Secker

Drama Department goes to Milan!

Two weeks ago, Miss Devaux and I were fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to go to Italy to share teaching ideas with studentsat the prestigious Collegio San Carlo School, in the centre of Milan. Staff and students who have been at Hayes for more than five yearswill remember that Mrs Haralambous, an English teacher, used to work at Hayes School. She returned to Milan after her teacher trainingin England, and now works at the school, which has among its alumni Sylvio Berlusconi’s grandson and footballer Paolo Maldini’s son.Opposite the front door is a small chapel where Leonardo Da Vinci’s ‘Last Supper’ is painted. The school is over 1,000 years old and steepedin history. The purpose of our visit was to share the teaching experience and ideas we have in Drama with the staff and students at the school, inorder that they might be able to apply them not only English, but all other subjects as well. We began by giving a seminar to the staffand students on the cultural faculty, who have classes taught in Italian and English. We showed pictures and DVD’s of our school that hadbeen compiled by Mrs Harney. Then Miss Devaux and I taught three one-hour classes each to the equivalent of Year 7, 8 and 9. We ledthem through a number of drama skills that everyone at Hayes would be familiar with such as Still Images and Thought-tracking, thenrelated them to literacy and learning, specifically Romeo & Juliet (Year 9), ‘Daffodils’ by William Wordsworth (Year 8) and ‘Nettles’ by VernonScanlon (Year 7). We were amazed at how quickly the students responded to the stimuli and skills we taught them. The highlight waswhen two students were hot-seated as Romeo then Juliet just after their first meeting at the Ball. All questions and improvised responseswere done in English!!The feedback we got after the classes from the teachers was very positive indeed. They thought that the students were far more engagedthan normal, and want to develop their plan to make all subjects accessible through drama techniques, from now on.We only stayed one full day, but had a wonderful time - apart from the weather, which was atrocious! The school wants to further linkswith Hayes, and will be visiting London next summer, so we hope that they will be able to come and visit and work with us.Thank you to Miss Devaux for her expertise on poetry and literacy, to Mrs Harney for all her hard work in the Media department, to Mr Osborne for permitting the visit and to Mrs Haralambous for organising all parts of our stay so efficiently.

Mr Eden, Teacher of Drama

Creative & Media Fashion Show

On May 1st after an intensive period of planning our Creative and Media Diploma students held a Fashion Show. The students were given the task of planning and producing an event as part of their assessment and produced an outstanding show. The audience was two Year 8 English classes who wrote a review of the event and interviewed the models and organisers.

Congratulations to Sian Marks, Lucy Hutchins and Lucy Reeves for organising the event and thanks to all the staff involved in helping them to make the event a roaring success. Special thanks also go to all of the brave models from the Sixth Form without who the event would not have been possible.

C4 Detentions

C4 detentions will now run on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday each week. Students should bring some work to the detention or they will be given worksheets to complete. The extra detention on Wednesday is to avoid a back log of detentions. The detention will run from 3pm-4pm in CGC.

In addition to students placed in detention for behaviour incidents it will now include students who have failed to attend an 8.00am detention. For example, a student that is late to school without reason or incurs two yellow slips for uniform issues during Monday is given an 8.00am detention for Tuesday. Should the student fail to attend this detention they will be given a C4 (one hour) detention for the Wednesday.

Plans for M block

Fantastic interest was shown by our students in our plans to build a new teaching block. After an invitation to view our plans for a new ‘M’ block on Friday afternoon, about 50 students arrived to scrutinise our plans to extend our facilities at Hayes. Much enthusiasm was shown with questions about sustainability, design, impact on subjects and the long term ambition of the school – a really positive atmosphere created by a really interested and positive group of students.

We hope to arrange for a display of the proposed building in the near future and will publish our plans on the web site. We look forward to more students, staff and parents taking an interest in the development of Hayes as a centre of excellence in education. All we need now is for Mr Osborne to find even more money!!

Ski Trip 2009

As we, a group of Year 8, 9 and 10 students, saw the breathtaking white desert of snow that lay before us,we knew that the best ski trip ever to be experienced by Hayes School students was about to commence. We were finally here, in thebeautiful resort of La Plagne. From the beginners to the more experienced skiers, every day would involve new challenges for us all. Whether we were skiing down themountain, or rolling down it (teachers included), everyone was enjoying themselves throughout the six days of excitement on the slopes. And that wasn’t all; whether laughing at the teachers embarrassing themselves at karaoke, or winding-down to watch a humorous film, theevenings were always entertaining too!Although we were exhausted by the end, we were very sorry that another exhilarating wonderful ski trip had come to a close. Thank you tothe teachers who organised and ran the trip for us.

Girls Ski Team County Champions

The senior Girls Ski team were crowned County Champions on Sunday when they successfully retained their title at Bromley Ski Slope. This was another fantastic achievement for the team who are regarded as one of the best teams in the country. The team was made up of Joanna Llewellyn, Georgia Luck, Amy Bryant and Ellie Steward. This was a particularly fitting way to end the season as it was Joanna and Amy’s last race for the school before they go to University. The Championship also marked the debut for a new boys team made up of Andrew Owens, Darren George, Tom Sutherland and Tom Bryant. The team also did fantastically well to finish 4th.

Once again thank you for the superb support of all parents.

For the first couple of hours everyone was hyperactive and excited, but didn’t realise how tiring it would get as the hours went by. We found it very hard but at midnight when the teachers asked if we wanted to go to sleep, we refused and told them “we came to do a 24 hour table tennis” and that is what we did. We would like to congratulate the people who stayed up all night and also those who stayed for the whole 24 hours. But thank you to those who took part anyway.
We have received great sponsorship from everybody and thanks to everyone who sponsored us, but currently we do not know the exact amount that has been raised. We speak for everyone when we say, we had a great time and loads of fun. Our advice for you is that if you get the chance to do a 24 hour event, then never give up and keep going till the end as the feeling inside once you have finished is amazing (most likely the adrenalin).

Kirkland Rowell Survey Results

94% of parents, 88% of students and 97% of staff rated Hayes School good or very good in our recent and first ever Kirkland Rowell survey which measures the perceptions of staff, students and parents and compares Hayes to schools nationally and to similar schools. This percentage is ‘outstanding’ according to Kirkland Rowell especially when compared to other schools. We are delighted with this recognition of our work as a school. It shows the commitment of students, staff, parents, governors and allassociated with the school. We all have much to be proud of and to celebrate as we continue to strive for excellence in all areas of the school from providing high quality education in the classroom to providing first-class opportunities for students to develop skills, talents and interests in sport, music and drama to name but a few. I have shared below the key findings from our staff, student and parent surveys. We are especially pleased with the response rate from all groups, which was particularly high in relation to other schools and indicates the shared commitment to Hayes being an outstanding school. 922 parents completed and returned the parent survey and over 1400 students responded to the student survey. Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the surveys. Both parents and school staff identified teaching quality and school discipline to be most important to them whilst also recognising thatthese are areas of strength for the school. 80% of parents judged the quality of teaching to be good or very good and this continues to be atop priority for teachers at the school. It was also encouraging to learn that 97% of parents felt the school met or exceeded their expectations of it. Over a third of parents feel that the school is better than they had expected it to be when their children first joined the school. Our arrangements for transfer from primary school were also praised by parents and the school’s reputation and academic standards at the school are key factors determining the decision of parents and students to join Hayes, rated above location. Our work to promote healthy lifestyles through diet and exercise was perceived by the overwhelming majority of parents and students to be good and in comparison with other similar schools is well developed. We do, however, wish to continue to look at ways to engage more students in healthy eating and physical activity through our healthy school provision and extensive range of extra-curricular activities. 35% of parents and 69% of staff recognised the progress the school has made in the past year identifying that the school has improved in the last year. Less than 3% felt the school had become worse in the last year. The quality of school management, range of extra-curricular activities and school communication were recognised as strengths of the school by parents and staff praised the respect students show each other and staff, student attitudes to learning (on the whole!) and the extent of support and knowledge of governors. The overwhelming response clearly demonstrates that in nearly every area Hayes School is meeting the needs and expectations of students, parents and staff, all of whom are proud of the school and the direction in which it is going. However, to improve all agree:
1. We need to maintain and continue to improve on our strengths e.g. school discipline, quality of teaching and learning, examination results
2. We need to address identified areas for development (perceived or actual) including careers guidance, the performance of some subjects and punctuality and attendance.
3. We need to continue to involve parents, students and staff in monitoring the school’s performance. We will therefore invite all to contribute to future surveys on an annual basis to allow us to measure improvements. More detailed information from the surveys can be found on the home page of the school website (www.hayes.bromley.sch.uk).

Thank you to all parents, students and staff for completing the surveys and for providing us with such valuable insights and information.

The event arranged and performed bystudents was a huge success and raised over £500 for the Teenage CancerTrust. We were all extremely pleased that Mason’s parents, sisters andother family members were able to come. The event included singing anddancing from students in all year groups and was a tribute to the immensetalent that we have at Hayes.

Swine Flu

We have recently received guidance from the Bromley authority on Swine Flu and the key message is for schools to operate normally and if the situation changes, further advice will be given. Symptoms are similar to seasonal flu and measures to prevent infection include
avoiding contact with people who are unwell, practice good hand hygiene e.g. wash hands with soap and water, cover nose and mouth when sneezing and dispose of tissues properly when used.
If you have recently travelled to Mexico or any other infected places could you please inform the school.

KS4/KS5 Actuary Lecture

Another Mathematics talk took place on 30th March. This time we invited Dan Bishop from RBS Insurance to talk about the ActuarialProfession. One of our students, James Cowley, wrote his impressions of the lecture:“When the Maths department says “Actuary Lecture” to a group of Year 11s and 6th Formers, one might expect a rather dreary hour tofollow – but after we all squeezed into a few dozen chairs beautifully arranged in the lecture hall (more commonly known as H1), thatprejudice had completely evaporated. An actual actuary (tongue-twister intended) took us comprehensively through the ‘ins and outs’ ofjust what one’s insurance premium goes to pay for, as well as explaining how as much as £18 million was paid out for a single accident. The talk managed to shed a fair amount of light on a somewhat mysterious profession and aroused more than a little interest, particularlywhen the wages an Actuary can earn were mentioned! Overall the lecture was an intriguing and informative hour of real-life Mathsapplied to real problems, which gave weight to the importance of our own studies”.

A Level Economics Trip

On 31st March five A level Economic students attended a debate at St Paul’s Cathedral. The theme for the debate was “My word is my
bond? Rebuilding trust - the G20 and beyond”. The debate was chaired by the Bishop of London, Richard Chartres. The Prime Minister was
joined on the platform by the Prime Minister of Australia, Kevin Rudd.
Members of the public were invited to attend the debate and over 2000 people filled St Paul’s Cathedral. Representatives from many
city institutions, charities, universities, colleges and schools were joined by clergy and members of the public and questions from the
audience were put to the panel.
Students gained a valuable insight into the Prime Ministers’ thoughts on the outlook for the global economy and potential solutions to
the current crisis. This insight will hopefully be put to good use in their forthcoming summer examinations, particularly for the three Year
13 students who are continuing with their study of Economics at university.

World Challenge Trip to Buxton

During the Easter holidays we, a group of Sixth Form adventurers, bravedthe elements and the rugged landscape of the Peak District. Exercises inleadership skills, trekking, cooking, budgeting, environmental care andemergency procedures were all performed in preparation for our WorldChallenge expedition to Kenya in the summer. There were not any maneatinglions, but the cooking and camping in bad weather was certainlyenough of a challenge! The trip gave us an insight into how we will have to work together as ateam in Kenya, and also it showed us some of the skills we will have tomaster. It was difficult at times, but a lot of fun, and now we are lookingforward to Kenya even more.

Music Tour to Croatia

With music usually confined to the classroom of CGF, the tour to Croatiawas certainly an eye-opener. After a rather arduous (but certainlyentertaining) coach journey, we arrived in the stunning country of Croatia, where the choir and band played in numerous beautiful and unusualvenues. Amongst these were the huge, glittering caverns of Slovenia, which certainly made a change from the school hall. Another day weperformed in botanical gardens, playing and singing out to the sea. Weperformed various numbers, the choir lighting the air with ‘Shine’ and theRazzy Dazzy band with ‘Carwash’.

Despite all the busy music-making, there was always time for shopping. After getting used to the somewhat confusing currency of Kuna, we wentround various towns, such as Opatija, to experience Croatian culture(and all the yummy food on offer). The weather was flawless throughoutthe trip, and I’m sure everyone was sorry to leave. It was an incredibleexperience, and I would urge anyone with a voice box to sign up to choirwith haste.

New York Media Trip

Imagine a group of about thirty Sixth Formers, (terrible I know). Imagine taking them on a school trip, (that’s even worse). Imagine taking this rowdy bunch on a seven hour plane journey, to a country with one of the strictest law and order systems in the world, (you’d be insane!). Although this seems a nightmarish task, needing a crack team of organisers and security, just 4 brave Media teachers attempted this feat on April 19th. It was the first ever Hayes School Media trip to New York and you know what? It went well!

After everyone had been herded through check-in, security, boarding, the flight itself, immigration and baggage claim, therewas only an hour long coach journey through Queens between the travellers and their hostel. This allowed us to take in the suburban burrow of New York and the eight mile cemetery which ran through it, but gave us a view of the magnificent Manhattan skyline. There was many a craned neck and photo taken of the new, busy, vibrant setting.

After everyone was settled in and a mass room change by the boys, (much to Miss Mayer’s disapproval), the group had no time to rest as we began our trip round Central Park discovering perfect photo opportunities, including a group of friendly, stone hippos. We made it back through the wind and the rain to the hostel for a good night’s sleep.

The second day started by getting the subway to the museum of moving image, (yes there was education involved in this trip), then to the Top of the Rock, seventy stories high! Here you could really take in the landscape and the sheer immensity that is New York. After that it was the informative NBC tour followed by Times Square. Truly the heart of the city, where you were met bymany a “I’m walking here” and “Anyone got a quarter?” A million neon lights and advertisements stretched as far as the eye could see, only in America.

On the third day we rode the Lady Liberty to Liberty Island and there she stood in all her glory: the Statue of Liberty. We got some 'once in a lifetime' snaps and headed out, back to Times Square, paying our respects to Ground Zero, putting in a spot of shopping and then off to Soho.

The final day we partook of some more media activities including virtual dancing at the Sony Centre and an advertising workshop. As the plane headed for home, thirty contented students turned in for a sleep whilst four Media teachers breathed a sigh of relief, but they were kept awake by the thought of the Year 12 students wanting a repeat trip next year.

A special thanks to Miss Mayer, Miss Rowland, Mr Alden-Jones and Mr Krywko without whom none of this would have been possible.

Extra Curricular Clubs – Summer ‘09

Welcome back to the summer term and a new range of extra curricular opportunities. We do hope that you will encourage your son/daughter to take full advantage of these. Please see attached clubs menu.We would encourage all students to attend at least three sessions each week, taking advantage of sporting, academic and recreationalclubs. For those sitting exams this year (Years 9, 11, 12 and 13), the extra support offered by departments should be accepted on a regularbasis starting on 27th April – it’s never too late to make a difference!!!There is much that can be achieved in developing understanding, skills, experience and confidence which can only help future examperformance. It is also an excellent opportunity to make new friends and try something different!!Best wishes to our students for a successful and productive term, resulting in excellent exam results later this year.My thanks and appreciation to all staff involved in the provision of such a super range of club opportunities outside of normal lessons.

Mr TW Scott, Deputy Head

Easter Revision Sessions

In the first week of the Easter holidays over 150 Year 11 students took part in GCSE revision sessions in a number of subjects. Sessions alsoran for Year 12 and Year 13 students preparing for A-level exams. These provided a valuable opportunity for students to focus on examtechnique, practice questions and revising key topics, skills and subject knowledge. I am particularly grateful to the staff for preparingand delivering sessions in the holidays and to the students for participating actively.A number of sessions continue to run this half-term in the run up to exams at lunchtime and after-school and during revision lessons. Iencourage students to make the most of these opportunities available to them. These are of course no substitute for the work studentswill need to engage in outside school and students should now have adopted the habits of revising regularly according to a revisiontimetable to secure the best possible chances of success this summer – good luck!

Year 12 UCAS Convention – 1st April 2009

I wanted to write on behalf of myself, Miss Moss, Mrs McNamara and Miss Robinson how immensely proud and grateful I am to our Year12 students for how they conducted themselves at the UCAS Convention before Easter. They were nothing short of impeccable in lightof both the date and the planned protests in the City. We could have easily cancelled the trip, however we are aware of how valuablestudents find the event; and their feedback on the day only served to confirm that we had made the right decision. We always expecthigh standards from our students, but never take it for granted and it is days like Wednesday that serve to remind both staff and studentswhy we value being part of the Hayes School community.

Revise, Get Good Grades and Save the Planet!

The SAM Learning Biodiversity Programme means that our school can help make a positive contribution towards improving theenvironment and creating stable wildlife habitats. Trees are the basic building blocks for much of our environment, providing habitatsfor a wide range of plants and animals. Last year there were over 2 million SAM Learning usage hours completed. So this year, for every3,000 hours of usage, SAM Learning will plant a tree in a UK managed forest. A dedicated page on the website will show visitors eachweek how many usage hours there are and how many trees have been planted www.samlearning.com
