Key Stage 3 Debating Club

On Friday 19th June, Miss Lipscombe and I accompanied 13 students from KS3 Debating Club to Bishop Justus School for their first “awaymatch”.We were welcomed with fruit juice and BJ’s famous biscuits, before entering into combat. In the first debate on “Young people have neverhad it so good”, Emma Corris, Poppy Simmons and Alex Randall held the opposition to a draw. In their debate on compulsory militaryservice, Chloe Edgely, Raphael Dabbs and Katy Hulm were narrowly beaten. Rebecca Cordina and Fiona Hawk carried out their duties astimekeeper and Chairperson with the same professionalism as our debaters, and our small but enthusiastic band of supporters (RobertAshby, Chantal da Silva, Anna Hunter, Kate Mawbey and Jordan Easy) held their “C’mon Hayes” banners aloft with pride! The competition was judged by Tim Green, who is Bromley’s lead English specialist; he was extremely complimentary about the confidence, articulacy and logic of all our speakers. All the students attending this event thoroughly enjoyed it, and were able to pick up many usefultips for future debates. We hope to establish this as a regular fixture in our Debating calendar, with Bishop Justus coming to Hayes in the very near future. We will be ready for them!
