Year 12 AS Biology Fieldwork Visit to BEECHE

Last Thursday AS Biology Year 12 students visited the Bromley Environmental Education Centre at High Elms (BEECHE) for a day of studying fieldwork techniques. The morning was spent looking at terrestrial habitats and how to sample on them, doing belt transects from open meadow into deep woodland. They also had a chance to try sweep netting in another meadow, and were able to visit a Site of Scientific Specific Interest (SSSI) where there were many species of different Orchids on chalk grassland. In the afternoon they were introduced to sampling in freshwater habitats and got the opportunity to identify freshwater invertebrates and learn how to take sweep nets samples in a freshwater habitat. Even with the heat and sun, the Year 12’s were exemplary in their behaviour and their effort throughout the day.
