Holocaust Assemblies

The theme of assembly this was week was the Holocaust. Holocaust Memorial Day took place on Wednesday 27th January. This year was the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp by the Russians. The horrors that were uncovered there have had an enormous effect on our subsequent history and show us the dreadful extent to which man has the capacity to bring hurt and suffering upon his fellow man. As time passes and fewer witnesses to the events of the Holocaust are with us to share their memories and to teach us their lessons, it becomes more important than ever to ensure that the legacy of the Holocaust is not forgotten by today’s young people. The purpose of this assembly was to ensure that our students do not become complacent about the society that they live in and to which they must seek to make a valuable contribution. By instilling in our students the values of enquiry over ignorance, they will play a major part in ensuring that hatred, prejudice and bigotry do not become a part of their own lives and that perhaps one day they can be eradicated totally from the communities we live in.
