Hayes Students help to make bus journeys better
On Thursday 9th July Hollie Jeffery, Luke Gentle, Maria Crisp, Jobie Budd, Owen Crowley and Grace Hunt from Year 10 took part in some filming for an information film which is being made by the Bromley Police Safer Transport Team and Bromley Borough.
Along with six students from Priory School and three senior citizens, our Year 10s’ played the roles of disgruntled passengers having to put up with the anti social behaviour of some hoodied and aggressive older citizens. The film will be shown on information screens around the Borough – so look out for these impressive performances.

Healthy Schools Award Presentation
The National Healthy Schools Award has four core themes that relate to both the school curriculum and the emotional and physical learning environment in school. Each theme includes a number of criteria that schools need to fulfil in order to achieve National Healthy School Status. This year Hayes School met all the criteria and secured Healthy School Status for the next three years.
On Monday 13th July Mr Preston, Miss Carter and a number of students attended the awards ceremony at the Education Development Centre to collect the new plaque and certificate.
Year 10 and Year 11 Information Evenings – Dates for you Diaries
In September we will be holding our usual Information Evenings for parents of Year 10 and Year 11 students. Feedback from previous years tells us that parents find this a very useful introduction to what lies ahead over the course of the coming year. The dates for next year are:
• Year 10 Information Evening – Tuesday 8th September
• Year 11 Information Evening – Wednesday 23rd September
We will contact you all again much nearer the time, but I wanted to highlight these dates now so parents can keep them free.
Thank you, we look forward to seeing you all in September.

PTA Fundraising – Match funding
Do you work for a company that offers match funding for events? If so, and you would be able to support our fundraising in school next year, please contact the PTA so that we can double the money raised for the school at future events and with future initiatives.
Back in the Day
My Year 10 GCSE Drama group recently completed a unique and extremely gratifying project involving senior residents from our local community. Last year’s Year 10 performed a show about infection and disease in the local hospital to trainee medical staff. This year we have focused on the memories of six local individuals, particularly the time in and after World War II.
We began by interviewing our guests about such topics as Evacuation, Rationing, life during the Blitz, and the Post-War period.
We then took these memories as the beginning point for devising a ‘documentary’ style drama which combined the facts of certain historical incidents 1939-55 with the personal memories of our guests. As the cast will no doubt tell you, this was been a great challenge, not only because there are 19 of them to allocate roles to, but deciding what to include, while remaining factually accurate and entertaining, proved extremely tricky!!
We would like to thank local residents Roy, Irene, Audrey, Harry, Arthur and Liz for giving up their time for us. Without them, there would have been no show. Also, without the efforts of expert Dr Meena Khatwa, Camilla Harney, Sylvia Farrow, Sarah Wharton from Year 11 and my fellow colleagues in the Drama department, we would never have got the show off the ground.
Finally, the students themselves, who worked through some long and very heated (!) after-school rehearsals. As our guest Liz Poulter said:
“I think this project worked very well indeed and I think the students really got inside the hearts of the people they were portraying…I found the production very emotional... It is a very odd feeling to be whisked back in time and to relive part of your life. This is exactly what happened – not only with the portrayal of my life, but those of other people who experienced similar things or lived in the same area. We all thoroughly enjoyed the experience… We cannot say how much we enjoy working with the students and being able to pass on the things we have learnt over the years. I am sure that it has made these students think and hopefully guide them in the future.”
Very well done. I am very proud of you all.

Hayes Breakdancers
Our Breakdance group 'Hayes-ablaze' performed at The Mermaid Theatre, London last Thursday. They have taken part in the Royal Academy of Dance 'Step Into Dance' programme throughout the year, culminating in a Borough performance at Kemnal Technology College last month. They performed and auditioned fantastically, alongside a number of other schools in the borough and this led to them being selected for the Step Into Dance Live! event.
They have worked really hard and have been the most committed and enthusiastic attendees at Dance clubs this year. Congratulations to Durone Stokes, Joe Dixon, Raven Whitehorne, Harvey Husnu-Beresford, Liam Briant, Daniel Toop, Kelvin Kyeremateng, Tom Nguyen, Kien Nguyen and Jordan Eels. Another fantastic achievement for Hayes dancers!
New Year 9 Maths Sets
We are lucky enough to be timetabled by ourselves next year for Year 9, allowing us to have true ‘ability’ sets. We have also been given an extra group in the uv population. This has caused some shuffling of the students. Please do not be concerned if your child’s Maths group changes by one. Miss Calder, 2i/c (KS3) Maths
KS3 Maths Textbooks
By now all of Year 7, 8 & 9 who were issued textbooks by the Maths department are expected to have returned them to their teachers. If they are still at home, please bring them in to any Maths teacher as soon as possible, so that we can prepare them for next years’ classes.
Year 10 Enterprise Day– Friday 17th July 2009
As part of the Work Related Learning curriculum Year 10 students had the opportunity of participating in a “Learn to Earn” activity-based programme in preparing them for their future working life. The day was designed to give students an understanding of how the importance of learning together with the significance of a successful education will help them to better succeed in their future lives.
It was a fun packed day with “hands-on” activities where students had the opportunity to explore and identify their aptitudes, abilities and things they enjoy doing and begin to match these with potential future careers. It also gave them an understanding of the type of skills, knowledge and experience required to meet their future goals.
This was a very successful and valuable day with a positive learning experience which should help students with career choices in the future. Thanks to Mr Hurst, Mr Preston and the Year 10 Form Tutors for their support during the day.

Year 12 AS Biology Fieldwork Visit to BEECHE
Last Thursday AS Biology Year 12 students visited the Bromley Environmental Education Centre at High Elms (BEECHE) for a day of studying fieldwork techniques. The morning was spent looking at terrestrial habitats and how to sample on them, doing belt transects from open meadow into deep woodland. They also had a chance to try sweep netting in another meadow, and were able to visit a Site of Scientific Specific Interest (SSSI) where there were many species of different Orchids on chalk grassland. In the afternoon they were introduced to sampling in freshwater habitats and got the opportunity to identify freshwater invertebrates and learn how to take sweep nets samples in a freshwater habitat. Even with the heat and sun, the Year 12’s were exemplary in their behaviour and their effort throughout the day.

Wednesday 15th July Hayes Summer Concert
Our evening of music started with the world debut of the LSO (Little Staff Orchestra): unbeknown to students, staff have been slaving away in secrecy on instruments many had not played for decades to produce a performance of ‘The Muppets’ for the concert. I would like to congratulate them all on their bravery in doing something well out of their normal comfort zone!
In case you missed the concert, members of the LSO were Miss Bessant and Miss Richards (flutes), Mr Cracknell, Mrs Jefferies, Miss Robertson and Miss Wotton (clarinets), Miss Rowland (saxophone), Miss Brushett (violin), Mrs Baker and Miss Wood (violas), Mrs Greenidge (double bass), Mr Budden and Mrs Stewart (piano), Mr Walker (drums), Dr Roseveare and Ms Johnson (recorders), Mr Hurst and Mrs MacMillan (percussion). We hope to hear more from the LSO in the future!
The concert continued with items from Samba Band, Wind Band, Chamber Choir and Keyboard Club. Special mention must go to Emily Mills and Sam Huckle for leading Samba Band and Daniel Thomas for leading one of the Keyboard Club pieces. We also had items from our Year 13 leavers; we are very sad to see Sian Arkins, Leanne Finch-Tanner and Kieran Hughes move on, but wish them all the very best for the future.
The second half of the concert took place in the natural amphitheatre otherwise known as the ‘blue circle’, and was a re-creation of one of our ‘tour concerts’ which we give on our tours abroad every April. Choir led the way with a ‘surround sound’ performance of Adiemus, followed by Concert Band and a fabulous drum solo from Max Dickerson to lead seamlessly into Jazz Band. All the musicians wore tour t-shirts from previous tours, and every single tour (except one) since 2001 was sartorially represented, giving a colourful effect in the evening sun.
Everyone present enjoyed a lovely evening with a huge range of fabulous music from talented Hayes students. I would like to thank the music prefects for their excellent help, and my wonderful colleagues in the Music department Mrs Greenidge, Miss Wood and Mr Hurst.

Tuesday 14th July – Sports Day (Years 7-10) and University Careers Day for Year 12
The day started brilliantly and we looked forward to another wonderful Sports Day at Norman Park. The organisation was brilliant. The student enthusiasm and talent quickly showed with the excellent performances and the enthusiastic cheering. However, the clouds came, the heavens opened and Sports Day ultimately had to be abandoned (before it turned into a swimming gala!). We apologise for this and for not being able to reschedule the event, but we felt we had no other option. The students and PE staff had put so much into the day that this was a great loss.
Monday 13th July – Bromley Collegiate Graduation at Hayes
This year over 60 teachers have been trained by the 9 Secondary Schools, including Hayes, that make up the Bromley Collegiate. On Monday evening we celebrated their graduation as fully qualified teachers at Hayes. The Hayes Jazz Band played, Sixth Formers served food and drink and the guests were full of praise for Hayes.
La Rochelle
La Rochelle trip left with students from Years 7-10 and 4 intrepid staff. The trip returned on Monday night exhausted, but with brilliant reports for the great time all had experienced and the fantastic impression all the students had made.
Excellence through Endeavour
This is our new school motto and one I think that sums up how much has been achieved by so many at Hayes this year. In all areas from the academic to the sporting, musical and dramatic to the personal and social it has been truly impressive to see the progress made and the excellent outcomes all achieved by incredible commitment and effort (endeavour!)
I hope all students can look back on 2008/9 with a real sense of achievement and those with imminent GCSE, AS and A level results can look forward with confidence to well deserved exam success. Not everyone can be excellent at everything, but with endeavour we all can improve and possibly achieve excellence – without endeavour we are condemned to underachievement, mediocrity and disappointment whether this is in Golf or Maths!
Thank you to all the students who have made Hayes such a great school to teach at, to the parents for your fantastic support of your children and the school and to the staff (teaching and associate) for their commitment, skill and care.
I wish everyone a safe and very happy summer and good luck for the exams!

London Youth Games – Girls Football
Once again a girl’s football team from Hayes were selected to represent Bromley at the London Youth Games. On Sunday 5th July the girls played a number of matches against the other London Borough’s. Each match was played to a very high standard and the girls played really well throughout the competition showing great team spirit. In the last match we were very unlucky not to win, with at least 8 shots on goal.
Congratulations and thanks for a fantastic day to; Amy Baldwinson, Ruby Briant, Laura Day, Stephanie Dewick, Laura Hughes, Nikki Lamboura, Tori Russell and Jade Stone.

Year 9 Enterprise Day – Dragon’s Pen
Year 9 students really enjoyed a challenging “hands-on” activity morning when, working in teams, they had to come up with new and original ideas which they then had to turn into a product to potentially sell to the public. This was an ideal opportunity for them to get a taste of and learn about business, as well as develop entrepreneurial skills, in a fun and practical environment.
The activity forms part of the Work Related Learning curriculum for Year 9 students and helped the students to develop their teamwork and communication skills. This successful and valuable day, was based on the television programme Dragon’s Den.
Thank you to Miss Harrison and Year 9 Form Tutors for their support during the day.

“Hayes School encourages and develops impressively confident and articulate girls who attain and achieve highly” (OfSTED 2009)
On Monday 22nd June Hayes School received a visit from two of Her Majesty’s Inspectors (HMI’s) to review how well the school supports girls’ achievement and well being. This is a new ‘themed’ inspection and will serve two purposes. Firstly, it assesses how well Hayes School challenges, supports and develops girls. Secondly, it is part of a national study to see if there are variations in girls’ achievement and well being compared to boys or between schools of different types (e.g. mixed, single sex etc) or by region. Hayes was the first school inthe programme of inspections and so the full report will not be available until next year.
The HMI visited lessons, reviewed exam results and other data, spoke to groups of students from all years and reviewed the curriculum, extra curricular activities and opportunities for
girls to develop to their potential without any stereotyping restrictions.
The HMI concluded that Hayes did an excellent job of challenging, supporting and developing girls. Their 3 main conclusions were:
1) Attainment and achievement of girls at Hayes is very high. The school is very effective in identifying and supporting students in danger of underachievement. The quality of teaching underlies this.
2) Hayes girls are happy, confident and articulate. They do not feel dominated or overshadowed by boys. They have opportunities to develop outside traditional gender stereotypes especially in Drama, but also in subjects such as DT, Science and Maths, which traditionally more boys have taken.
3) The care and support system at Hayes is incredibly effective in supporting girls. Teachers and associate staff were praised bythe girls for being available, giving time and helping to resolve
individual and group problems. The HMI felt this was essential especially for girls well being.
In conclusion the HMI praised the school for its ethos and commitment to raising the achievement of all students and providing outstanding care for girls which make them feel safe
and happy and become confident, articulate and successful individuals.

Swine Flu
Please note that as Swine Flu has become very widespread (although no cases yet at Hayes) the health authority guide is:a) Continue to use good hygiene practice especially washing your hands with soap and water. We are regularly checking that soap isavailable in all the toilets. Also use tissues to cover your mouth if you cough or sneeze and bin tissues as soon as possible.b) Do not come to school if you have a fever and flu like symptoms. Contact NHS direct or your local surgery (do not go there).c) Schools are to remain open as there is no evidence that closing them would reduce the spread as it is circulating in the widercommunity. The main evidence is that Swine Flu is not very different from other types of flu and is generally mild except in a minority of cases. We will keep parents and students informed if we have any confirmed cases of Swine Flu or the advice changes.

Road Safety
We are getting concerned again about the safety issues in the morning at the Baston Road and West Common Road entrances.Firstly, at the Baston Road entrance students often cross both lanes of this busy road near the East Lodge gate and should cross the roadone lane at a time using the island opposite the Media Zone gate. Also students getting off the bus in Baston Road tend to just walk out infront of the traffic expecting the cars to stop. This also happens in West Common Road when students cross the road.Secondly, at both entrances parents are dropping off students inside the school grounds where staff park. Parents are not permitted todrop off their child on the school site unless there are exceptional circumstances. Please could you ensure you child is aware of the safety procedures highlighted above and please ensure when dropping off your child atthe school you do not drive on to the school site. Thank you.
Student Reception
Please be advised that when parents leave lunches, PE kits, homework etc for students to collect from Student Reception we cannotalways guarantee they will receive the message to collect the items. We currently do not have a tannoy system, but endeavour to get messages to students via registers and email messages to tutors. Can we suggest you either text your child to inform them so they can collect the item at break times or ensure your child checks their bagsbefore they leave for school in the morning to ensure they have anything they need for the day. Thank you.

8AB Versus Staff in Quiz for Year 8 Charity
Last Wednesday, a team of five 8AB members went head-to-head against a staff team in a quiz to raise money for Year 8’s children’s charityin Haiti. The 8AB members (Charlotte Green, Daniel Biggs, Max Gauntlett, Michael Whittingdon and Kieran O’Brien) did a fantastic job, beating thestaff to the buzzer first on a number of occasions. The Staff team consisting of Mrs Loader, Mr Dodson, Mrs Travers, Mr Mulligan andMiss Allman, made a number of valiant attempts to out-fox the 8AB team. The staff team won in the end, beating 8AB 15-13.A big thank you to Henry Terry, The Quizmaster, who did a superb job of hosting the quiz, scorekeepers Ellie Gentle and Jack Vickery andMiss Lipscombe and Mr Cooper for setting up and organising the event on the day. Also thank you to all of 8AB for all their hard work and especially to those who supported the team on the day.
Key Stage 3 Debating Club
On Friday 19th June, Miss Lipscombe and I accompanied 13 students from KS3 Debating Club to Bishop Justus School for their first “awaymatch”.We were welcomed with fruit juice and BJ’s famous biscuits, before entering into combat. In the first debate on “Young people have neverhad it so good”, Emma Corris, Poppy Simmons and Alex Randall held the opposition to a draw. In their debate on compulsory militaryservice, Chloe Edgely, Raphael Dabbs and Katy Hulm were narrowly beaten. Rebecca Cordina and Fiona Hawk carried out their duties astimekeeper and Chairperson with the same professionalism as our debaters, and our small but enthusiastic band of supporters (RobertAshby, Chantal da Silva, Anna Hunter, Kate Mawbey and Jordan Easy) held their “C’mon Hayes” banners aloft with pride! The competition was judged by Tim Green, who is Bromley’s lead English specialist; he was extremely complimentary about the confidence, articulacy and logic of all our speakers. All the students attending this event thoroughly enjoyed it, and were able to pick up many usefultips for future debates. We hope to establish this as a regular fixture in our Debating calendar, with Bishop Justus coming to Hayes in the very near future. We will be ready for them!
