Mathematics Talk – Cryptography and de Da Vinci Code

On 4th March Professor Keith Martin visited Hayes School to give a lecture on Cryptography and Internet Security to Sixth Form students. The talk went well with a relaxed atmosphere which allowed the conversation to flow and opening the room to a dialogue instead of a lecture. Prof Keith Martin’s approach to the topic was interactive and didn’t alienate any of the students.

Starting from a quotation from ‘The Da Vinci Code’, he explained the relationship between cryptography and Internet security. He went on to explain how maths plays a part in making things safer in a very subtle way. The talk was inclusive for pupils of all abilities and clearly illustrated how things can be connected in a way that mathematics could be used to represent.

We would like to thank all those involved in this event and praise the students that attended. One of them left a mark a bit deeper than the others by the enthusiastic way he interacted and responded to the challenges presented. Professor Martin was impressed by the whole audience. He left Hayes with a fantastic impression of the high standards demanded by our teachers and the excellence of our students.
