Reporting Absences
seen by the Attendance Officer.
If you notify us your child is off sick one day and they do not appear the next, we will not assume they are still unwell. We kindly request you call us every day your child is going to be absent.
We run an automatic truancy call system on an ad hoc process so if your child is marked absent during morning registration it is possible you will receive one of these calls.
Errors do sometimes occur during registration when a child is marked absent by mistake so if you are contacted by the automated system and your child should be in school, please let us know and we will do a lesson check.
There are numerous activities which mean students miss registration such as assemblies, sports, educational visits or additional lessons. Unfortunately notification of these may not always find their way to the Attendance Officer so you may receive letters from us too.
We write to parents on a monthly basis if a student has any unexplained absences on their attendance record. We do not wish to offend any parent, or indeed any student, by appearing to accuse them of playing truant. We simply wish to ensure our students are safe and their whereabouts are known by you if we find they are not in school.
A quick telephone call and a letter from you could save us all time later on and will reduce the number of unexplained absences we have to resolve. Lastly, holidays during term time should not be taken. However, we do understand that sometimes they cannot be avoided and such instances will be acknowledged by the school but they will not be authorised.
Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
Hayley J Berry, Attendance Officer

Creative Writing Course
The students were then led through a series of creative writing tasks, inspired by what they had seen. Bridget’s expertise was invaluable and the students created some superb and original writing as a result. Many took the opportunity to ask Bridget her advice on becoming a published author. Judging by the impressive standard of writing delivered on the day, I am sure Hayes will indeed produce some very successful authors in the future.
Hayes Primary School
In the first part of their session, led by Mr Cooper, they had to search for different images on the Internet. When they had found several they opened these up in Photoshop and changed the sizes so they had a background image and some other smaller elements, plants, animals etc. that they then cut out and added on in layers. The final part was to add the text, choosing a line or two from their poems they learned how to change the font, size and colour and add effects.
Working in pairs they created more than fifty professional looking posters. They were understandably proud of their efforts and the amount that they had learned about Photoshop in such a short time. They particularly enjoyed working in the Mac suite with the new computers and working with the Sixth Form helpers.
Year 11 Maths Mock
There will be an exam briefing at 8:30am on 20th April followed by the calculator exam that encompasses the full content of GCSE Maths syllabus. Students will complete this under exam conditions and it is compulsory for them to attend. Please remind them to bring the appropriate equipment including a calculator on the first day back. The non-calculator exam will be
completed in lessons during the week. We strongly believe that this will result in improvement in achievement and would be grateful for your support.

DNA Computer Asset Marking
within the school. Our assets are marked in 2 ways to identify them to the
police. 1st is a stencil which is “burnt” into the casing of the computers and
the 2nd is a “DNA” gel coating which has microscopic chips identifying
the property owners – and if removed – remains on the person unseen
but detectable by the police. The kit has been ‘tried and tested’ for over 20
years. Selectamark Property Marking kit is recommended by the Police,
Home Office and many Insurance Companies. In some areas its use has
reduced break-ins by 98%.
Sainsbury's Active Kids Vouchers
February to 3rd June you will be able to receive one Sainsbury’s voucher
for every £10 you spend at any Sainsbury’s stores. You can also earn
vouchers at any Sainsbury’s petrol stations and convert your Nectar points
into vouchers by visiting www.nectar.com. Vouchers should be placed in
the collection box at Student Reception or in the PE office.

We would all like to thank, Lesley Farley, Mrs Boyden, Miss Allman and Miss Parsons for staying and supporting us through the night. We would also like to thank Mr Osborne for coming in at 5.30am to play and Mr Scott and Miss Moss for bringing us breakfast and all the support given over the 24 hours.

After Easter, cheques will need to be made payable to Wilson Jones. We will send a reminder about this requirement at the end of term and beginning of next term.
Easter Concert - Tuesday 31st March
It is always a terrific event and we would love to see you there! Tickets are £4 (concessions £3) including refreshments, and are available from the Music Department.
New School Motto
At the same time we invited all parties to suggest new mottos to us. Over 120 were suggested. These were discussed by the School Council who reduced this list down to approximately 10. These were then discussed by the Senior Leadership Team and the list was reduced down to 5 possible new mottos for Hayes School.
The 5 suggested new mottos are:
- Learning today for a better tomorrow
- Our school, our learning, our future
- Living to learn, learning for life
- Excellence through endeavour
- Opportunity through education
In recent weeks we have surveyed all staff and governors again to ask them to vote for their preferred new motto. Later this term we will be contacting all students (through the Student Council) to ask them to vote for one of these five alternatives, but now we would like to hear from you, our parents.
I would be very grateful if you would let me have your vote on our new motto; which of these five do you prefer? Please either write to me at school or e-mail at l.preston@hayes.bromley.sch.uk and let me know your preference by Friday 27th March. I look forward to hearing from you.

Girls Football Weekend
On Sunday, yet more activities with the climbing wall, where most of us made it to the top and rang the bell, and the challenge course in the morning. Then the rain and hail arrived, but no sitting in our rooms for us, up on to the high ropes course, 30 feet in the air jumping from tyre to rope swing. Unfortunately we couldn’t do the giant swing as it was too windy, so instead we went on a sensory trail, where we were blindfolded and had to find our way round, through and over some obstacles. We were all a bit sad to leave as we had enjoyed ourselves so much. Having changed into dry clothes we were on our way home and after a coach, train, tube and train we were back at Hayes station.
Thank you to Mrs Parsons and Mrs Boyden for making the trip so enjoyable.

The Tragical History of Dr. Faustus – Presented by Hayes School Productions 2009
There were outstanding performances from all of the cast, but special mention must be given to Henry Smith, who as Dr. Faustus, was on stage for almost the entire performance and he deserves immense praise for learning and delivering a really challenging role in such a dominating manner. This was also true of so many others in the cast, all of whom deserve to be extremely proud of their performances.
Praise and recognition is also due to the ‘crew’ for all their work on staging, costumes, lighting etc. It was an ambitious production delivered in the round with a cast of over 40, made successful by the creativity and hard work of the crew.
Finally thank you to all the staff involved. As with the students they have put in months of rehearsals and given up countless evenings and many weekends. The play reflected this dedication as well as the staffs’ teaching skills and their belief in the students.
Well done and congratulations to the Drama department and especially to the Director, Mr Eden and Miss Higgins the Assistant Director.

Year 11 Hayes Students Visit Kent University
huge library, sports complex, cinema end entertainment venues. We then had lunch in the stunning Rutherford dinning hall which overlooks Canterbury. In the afternoon the students had another talk about how students survive – especially the first few weeks away from home, looked into finances and how to organise their priorities. Just about every student said that the
day had inspired them to go to university.

Carbon Road Show
All students carried out a two-hour session which involved an introduction from BP. This was followed by an interactive voting session where students put their current view points on ‘carbon’ related challenges in their lives.
Students were then divided into three groups. The groups were:
• The Environmental group who looked at where carbon emissions come from in a school. Students worked in small groups and carried out presentations.
• The Economic group were given a budget and asked how the school could reduce carbon emissions.
• The Social group looked at how various people in a school could make a difference. The groups looked at were students, teachers, senior management and support staff. Students acted out small dramas to highlight how these people can influence a school’s carbon footprint.
Students then carried out a plenary session in which presentations from each of the groups were given to others. The interactive voting session was carried out again to see how student’s votes had changed over the session. In the future students will then carry out follow up sessions in school to see how Hayes and individuals working in the school can reduce the carbon footprint. Some suggestions made by the students were to include more recycling options e.g. for plastic rather than just for paper and cans, using energy saving light bulbs, not leaving appliances on standby and making sure double glazing is used. More information can be found on www.enterprisingscience.com where Hayes will have there own school page. All the results from the surveys and photographs of the event can be found on this website. An article highlighting the event will be in the local Newsshopper paper in the next couple of weeks.

Lost Phone Thank you
‘We just wanted to send a note to show a little appreciation to a Hayes Sixth Former. Our son lost his phone on the way home after school. A member of the Sixth Form heard it ringing in the street, answered my call and then told me not to worry they would hand it in at a shop so that I could collect it. Unfortunately we do not know the boy’s name, but we would like to pass on a general 'thank you' - it is lovely to know that our son is at a school which is obviously surrounded by great role models.’
Thank you to Charlie and Tristan for their kindness.
Well done to 1st Hayes Guides
part overall and the girls from 1st Hayes Guides won!
Year 9 Council Reps
ask anything to a panel of councillors and police officers. Questions were asked about:
• Stop and search
• Bus drivers in Bromley/oyster cards
• What is being done about crime
• Plans for Bromley
The day was a success and the questions were very helpful as it was a chance for the youth of Bromley to have a say. It was a good learning experience. Thanks to Miss Harrison and Mr Loomes for taking us.

Mathematics Talk – Cryptography and de Da Vinci Code
Starting from a quotation from ‘The Da Vinci Code’, he explained the relationship between cryptography and Internet security. He went on to explain how maths plays a part in making things safer in a very subtle way. The talk was inclusive for pupils of all abilities and clearly illustrated how things can be connected in a way that mathematics could be used to represent.
We would like to thank all those involved in this event and praise the students that attended. One of them left a mark a bit deeper than the others by the enthusiastic way he interacted and responded to the challenges presented. Professor Martin was impressed by the whole audience. He left Hayes with a fantastic impression of the high standards demanded by our teachers and the excellence of our students.

ParentMail
We are aware that not all parents have access to email/internet at home so we will continue to have the option of paper copies for those who request this. Our first step is to use Parentmail for the newsletter.
Already over half of our families receive the Newsletter electronically as well as receiving a paper copy via their son or daughter. From next week we will let each Tutor have copies of
the Newsletter for those parents who have not signed up to Parentmail. Students will need to tell their Tutor they need a paper copy. Hopefully all parents will sign up to Parentmail and we can cease issuing paper copies entirely.

Jaguar Cars Maths in Motion

On 12th February Daniel, Stephen, George and Enrique were the drivers selected to race against Langley Park School for Boys as part of the Jaguar Cars Club. Langley has run the club for the past 4 years and we started this year. In January we accepted their challenge to race against them and the chosen circuit was Albert Park in Melbourne Australia. The race was fantastic and really exciting. Daniel ‘Bond ‘ Thomas was first during most of the race, but was overtaken by ‘Apocolipse’ from Langley Park at the last minute. The gap between the two was 0.7
seconds!!!
Academic Tutoring Day - Wednesday 11th March
Our second Academic Tutoring Day is taking place on Wednesday 11th March 2009. During Academic Tutoring Day, the normal school timetable is suspended to allow us to conduct personal interviews with students across all year groups in the school. Students will only be required to attend school on this day for approximately 30 minutes.
Students will have received appointment details this week. These can also be accessed via the school website. The Study Centre will be available to students throughout the day and a limited lunch service will be offered by the canteen.
Students should come prepared to their interview having considered the following:
What are they proud of?
What have been their achievements this term?
What are their areas for development?
Which subjects are they projected to achieve well in (in relation to benchmarks)?
Are there subjects in which they are currently not projected to achieve their benchmark – WHY?
What progress have they made in meeting their action points as agreed in November at Academic Tutoring Day? [EVIDENCE]
Has their attendance been good so far this year?
Academic Tutoring Day is a part of our ongoing commitment to ensure that students achieve their potential and are happy at Hayes School.
